It’s a hot day, but the shade of the big oak tree offers some relief. The children are playing, their laughter echoing in the air. This is Edith Sampson Playground, a haven in New Orleans for countless families. Did you know it was named after Edith Sampson? She was the first black woman from the United States to be appointed a judge in a foreign country, but not just any country. She was a judge in the Supreme Court of the League of Nations. In 1945, Edith Sampson was elected to serve as one of the 18 judges of the International Court of Justice in Geneva, Switzerland.
The playground is a testament to this amazing woman, a symbol of her strength, and a reminder of her legacy. The park is a popular spot for kids to hang out, but it’s also a place where people come to remember a woman who broke down barriers. She paved the way for many others to achieve their dreams, and her story is an inspiration to all.
