What lies on the left bank of the Neckar River, a stone’s throw from both Mannheim and Heidelberg? That would be Edingen-Neckarhausen, a charming municipality steeped in history. Long before its official unification in 1975, Edingen-Neckarhausen existed as two separate villages: Edingen and Neckarhausen. Both were inhabited as far back as the Celtic period, drawn to the area’s fertile land and pleasant climate. Edingen first appeared in historical records in 765, mentioned in a document from the Lorsch Abbey. Neckarhausen followed shortly after, with its first recorded mention in 773, also in connection with the Lorsch Abbey. Today, Edingen-Neckarhausen proudly displays the Lorsch cross on its coat of arms, a tribute to this historical link. Interestingly, in the late 18th century, Neckarhausen became the seat of the Counts von Oberndorff. The last Count von Oberndorff to reside in Neckarhausen was a prominent figure. He served as the German ambassador to Oslo, Sofia, and Warsaw, and played a crucial role in the armistice negotiations of 1918. You can still visit the grand classical palace of the Counts von Oberndorff in Neckarhausen. Today, this impressive structure houses a captivating museum, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich past. Edingen-Neckarhausen, a town born from two villages, offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty on the banks of the Neckar.
