Edificio U28 stands as a testament to the University of Milano-Bicocca’s commitment to cutting-edge biomedical research. Inaugurated in December 2015, this five-story structure pulsates with the energy of researchers, doctoral students, and post-docs. They delve into emerging fields like nanomedicine and “omics” sciences. These disciplines, including genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, are revolutionizing precision medicine. Edificio U28 cost a substantial 13.7 million euros. The regional government contributed 6.5 million, recognizing the importance of this research. It’s not just about bricks and mortar. Edificio U28 is designed to be a magnet for researchers and funding, both public and private, from around the globe. The name Kytos, Greek for “cell,” reflects the building’s focus on the very building blocks of life. Imagine the five floors humming with activity. Labs equipped with five lines of technical gases, compressed air, vacuum systems, and extraction systems facilitate groundbreaking experiments. Specialized rooms house temperature-controlled chambers and freezers. A vast 1500 square meter space in the basement is dedicated to biological containment labs and clean rooms. A data center within Edificio U28 collects and processes medical data, making it accessible to all researchers, fostering collaboration and accelerating discoveries. Edificio U28 also aims to shorten the time it takes for clinical trials to reach patients. This means faster access to life-saving treatments and therapies. The building is a result of a collaborative effort between the Lombardy Region, the University of Milano-Bicocca, the Municipality of Vedano al Lambro, the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, and the Province of Milan. Edificio U28 stands as a beacon of hope and innovation, where science and collaboration converge to unlock the secrets of human health.
