Picture the sleek lines of Edificio Montedoria. It stands tall a testament to mid-century modern design. This architectural marvel is more than just an office building. It’s a piece of Milanese history. Designed by the legendary Gio Ponti its construction spanned from 1968 to 1971. It was his final Milanese masterpiece.

Edificio Montedoria occupies a triangular city block. It sits nestled between Via Macchi and Via Pergolesi. Its northeastern corner faces Piazza Caiazzo. The building comprises two sections. One soars to eight floors plus a ground floor. The other is a lower three-story structure. Both are connected by a central core housing stairs elevators and service areas.

Ponti’s initial design from 1963-64 envisioned a 50-meter tower. This was to be accompanied by a three-story base. The plan was rejected. It didn’t meet the city’s building regulations. So Ponti created a revised design. This limited the building’s height to 30 meters. The volume was more evenly distributed. The construction was finally completed in 1971.

Notice the distinctive facade. It’s clad in faceted green ceramic tiles. These reflect the sunlight beautifully. The windows are flush with the exterior walls. This eliminates harsh shadows. Ponti cleverly divided the main facade into smaller sections. This created a sense of proportion and visual rhythm.

Edificio Montedoria isn’t just about aesthetics. It reflects a specific moment in Milan’s architectural and urban development. The building’s design responded to strict regulations. The result is a unique structure a captivating blend of form and function.

Today Edificio Montedoria is a thriving office building. It houses numerous businesses. It continues to captivate viewers with its unique architectural features. The building also boasts BREEAM In Use certification at a “Good” level for its common areas. This demonstrates the building’s commitment to sustainable practices.
