“These concrete giants defy gravity” I started. Right here before us stands the Edificio Los Cubos. Its nickname perfectly describes its unique design. Sixteen massive concrete pillars support the structure. Each pillar is two and a half meters in diameter. They are strikingly visible. This bold architectural statement is impossible to ignore.

The Edificio Los Cubos isn’t just a building. It’s a piece of Madrid’s architectural history. Originally built between 1976 and 1981 it housed the French insurance company AGF. Its design inspired by the French architect Yona Friedman and the Metabolist Movement. The Metabolist movement envisioned cities as ever-changing organic entities. This is reflected in the Cubos design. It shows a modernistic belief in growth and constant change.

The building has changed hands several times. Initially owned by AGF it later belonged to Allianz. Then Sempreda S.L.U acquired it followed by Realia Business S.A. For a time it even served as the headquarters for Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation. Then in 2017 Tamana Servicios Empresariales S.L.U a company within the British fund Henderson Park purchased it. Henderson Park initiated a significant renovation. They updated the building for modern office use. In 2023 Kyndryl a technology company took over the first four floors.

The renovation was extensive. It transformed the interior and exterior of the building. Chapman Taylor architects led the refurbishment. They focused on modernizing the interior and enhancing its functionality. The renovation included upgrades to lighting access materials and the lobby. Parking was redesigned to favor electric vehicles. Two terraces now offer event and relaxation spaces. This renovation is a testament to the building’s enduring appeal.

Today Edificio Los Cubos stands as a symbol of Madrid’s architectural evolution. It is a testament to the vision of its original designers. It represents the bold embrace of modern design principles. Yet its adaptable nature proves its enduring relevance. Even with a refurbishment the Cubos’s unique design remains unforgettable. Its distinctive design continues to provoke reactions ranging from admiration to criticism. It has secured a prominent place in Madrid’s skyline. It’s a captivating example of how architecture can transform over time while retaining its core identity.
