Envision yourself in 1930, amidst the excitement of the Edifício Heliantia’s grand opening. The air buzzed with anticipation as Dr. Joaquim Ferreira Alves, a visionary in health and well-being, welcomed his first patients to this innovative clinic. Edifício Heliantia, a masterpiece of modern architecture, stood proudly overlooking the sea in Valadares, Vila Nova de Gaia. Its striking design, a rectangular four-story structure adorned with wide balconies and a flat concrete roof, was the brainchild of architect Francisco de Oliveira Ferreira. The clinic’s name, Heliantia, derived from the Greek words “helios” (sun) and “anthos” (flower), paid homage to the healing power of sunlight, a core principle of Dr. Alves’s practice. The building’s unique features, such as the cascading balconies on the south facade and the round, striated pillars separating them, were carefully designed to maximize sunlight exposure for the patients. Edifício Heliantia’s balconies were further embellished with stylized sunflower motifs, a nod to the clinic’s name and the life-giving energy of the sun. Even the interior details, like the iron elevator grilles and the main staircase, incorporated this sunflower design. Dr. Alves’s commitment to heliotherapy, inspired by Dr. Rollier’s renowned clinics in Switzerland, set Edifício Heliantia apart. He believed in harnessing the therapeutic benefits of the sun to treat various ailments. Inside, patients found a serene environment with mosaic floors featuring the letter “H.” These Belgian-made mosaics were a testament to Dr. Alves’s dedication to quality and detail. In later years, the Edifício Heliantia served as the Instituto de Estudos Superiores Financeiros e Fiscais (IESF). Then, in 1991, it found new life as the Atlântico Business School and Colégio Heliantia. Today, this architectural gem continues to inspire. It stands as a monument to innovation and a reminder of the power of nature in healing. Edifício Heliantia remains a testament to Dr. Alves’s vision and a beacon of architectural brilliance in Vila Nova de Gaia.
