Standing in front of the Edificio C, you might not realize it was once a symbol of Cali’s industrial boom. This impressive building, with its blend of Renaissance and Moorish architectural styles, harks back to a time when Cali was booming. The Edificio C was originally built in 1934 as a regional headquarters for the Colombian Tobacco Company, better known as Coltabaco. Its construction was a tribute to Cali’s 400th anniversary, a testament to progress and modernity. For decades, the scent of tobacco filled its halls, a reminder of the industry that helped shape Cali’s identity. The company faced hard times in the 1990s, eventually being absorbed by Philip Morris in 2005. However, the Edificio C remained a landmark, even as its ownership changed hands over the years. In 2016, the Edificio C was donated to the city of Cali. This marked a new chapter in its life, a shift from industry to arts and culture. The building underwent extensive renovations, transforming into the home of the Instituto Universitario de las Artes y las Culturas Populares, or IUIPC.
