You probably wouldn’t recognize him if you walked past him at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. He’s a bronze statue in the middle of Allan Border Field, and his name is Eddie Gilbert. But in the 1930s, he was an unstoppable force on the cricket pitch and everyone knew him, even the great Donald Bradman. And let’s be honest, those who know the story of the man who dismissed Bradman for a duck – and it was a duck, as in zero runs – can’t help but look up in anticipation and wonder what’s behind the myth of Eddie Gilbert. This memorial was unveiled in 2008, 15 years after he died, to memorialize the fast bowler from Queensland. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who faced, and even defied, the racism of his time. This is a complex heritage. Even though he was the fastest bowler of that era, he never got to play for Australia because of the discrimination he faced as an Aboriginal Australian. This is the story of a man who was rejected from a national team he’d easily conquered, and his story is a testament to the power of resilience in the face of prejudice. While the Eddie Gilbert memorial stands in front of this very field, it is a reminder of the strength of this man and the impact he had on the game, despite the discrimination he faced.
