Whispers of a forgotten past echo through the trees. Welcome to Eddebo. Right here in Frueskoven you stand on hallowed ground. Here lie the remnants of not one but two medieval castles.

Eddebo a name that translates to “ancestral seat” was once a powerful symbol of the Jul family. Their influence stretched far. They were among the leading families of Flensburg. One prominent member Peter Juel even served as Flensburg’s first mayor. Records from March 27 1401 name Ivar Juel as the owner.

The first castle a water fortress was built on what is known as the Brandplatz. It was quite substantial. It measured approximately 70 meters long and 45 meters wide. A moat connected to a nearby stream protected it. Imagine the strategic advantage. Think of the skilled craftsmanship.

Later about 100 meters west on the Junkerplatz a larger castle arose. This second Eddebo was even more impressive. Its dimensions exceeded the first at 150 meters long and 130 meters wide. Its towering earthworks and a wide moat made it a formidable stronghold. Some believe it could have been a motte-and-bailey castle. The remains of the ramparts remain visible today in Frueskoven.

Legends paint a vivid picture. Five noble families once held sway over the surrounding area. They were said to have caused great harm to Flensburg’s citizens. These families were either bought out or forcibly removed. These legends speak of the wild knight of Eddebo. His misdeeds were so egregious that stories say his castle sank into the earth one dark night. All perished. One maiden escaped. She is said to have donated the forest to the church.

Eddebo’s story is entwined with Flensburg’s history. The Jul family’s power diminished. Eventually Eddebo fell into ruin. The land encompassing most of Mariemarken became part of the crown. It fell under the jurisdiction of Vis Herred. It remained an enclave within Flensburg’s city limits. The rest including Frueskoven eventually came under the possession of the Holy Ghost Hospital and then Marie Church.

But Eddebo’s legacy lives on. Today you can still explore its fascinating remains. You can walk where powerful noble families once resided. You can imagine the drama. Eddebo is a treasure that whispers tales of the past. A testament to the rich heritage of this region. A connection between a bygone era and the modern world. A timeless marvel.
