Gazing up at the Econo Lodge, did you ever imagine it began with a girl in a kilt? The Econo Lodge, as we know it, started its journey as Econo-Travel in 1969. Right here in Norfolk, Virginia, a developer named Vernon Myers, his son, and businessman Lloyd Tarbutton launched this budget-friendly motel dream. Their first mascot, “Sandy,” sported a short Scottish skirt and tam, promoting their inaugural motel at 865 North Military Highway. The Econo Lodge brand promised clean, affordable rooms, a concept quite novel back then. The initial rates were a steal: $7 for a single, $9 for a double, and $11 for a room for four. By 1983, Tarbutton sold the burgeoning chain, boasting 306 locations, for a staggering $836 million. During the late 1970s, the name transitioned from Econo-Travel to the Econo Lodge we recognize today. The brand has seen its share of changes and owners over the years. Eventually, it landed with Choice Hotels International in 1990. Today, Econo Lodge remains a popular choice for travelers seeking budget-friendly accommodations, often conveniently located near highways. They even offer complimentary breakfast now. So, next time you see an Econo Lodge, remember Sandy and her kilt, a symbol of the brand’s humble beginnings.
