Did you know Montreal has a unique zoo? It’s called the Ecomuseum Zoo. Here at the Ecomuseum de la Pointe-aux-Trembles, we’re not just looking at animals. We are exploring Quebec’s wildlife.

The Ecomuseum Zoo is special. It is the only outdoor zoo on the Island of Montreal. You can reach it in just 30 minutes from downtown.

Founded in 1988, the Ecomuseum Zoo began with a mission. The St. Lawrence Valley Natural History Society wanted to educate children. They wanted to teach them about the environment. Dr. John Roger Bider founded the society in 1981.

Initially, the land was wetland. In the 1960s, it became a landfill. The Ecomuseum transformed it into a haven for native species.

The Ecomuseum Zoo focuses on animals from the St. Lawrence Valley. It is home to 115 different species. These animals cannot be released back into the wild. Some were injured. Some were orphaned. Others were born under human care. The Ecomuseum provides them with a secure home. The home meets all their needs.

The Ecomuseum Zoo is a non-profit organization. Its mission centers on environmental education. It also works on wildlife conservation. Animal welfare is very important here. The Ecomuseum is accredited by CAZA-AZAC. This organization promotes animal well-being. It also supports education and scientific research.

The Ecomuseum Zoo first offered education programs in 1989. The first building opened in 1992. It was used for administration and education. In 1996, the Ecomuseum opened in the winter for the first time.

Consider becoming a member. Members get unlimited access to the zoo. It starts at just $50 per year. You can also find responsible gifts here. These gifts help support the Ecomuseum’s mission.

So, while you’re here at the Ecomuseum de la Pointe-aux-Trembles, remember its purpose. It’s more than just a zoo. It’s a place of learning and conservation. It is a place that connects us to Quebec’s natural heritage. The Ecomuseum is open 364 days a year. Only Christmas Day is a day of closure. Come and experience the wild side of Quebec.
