“Sacred space,” some whisper as they approach ECI Zion Church. Let me tell you a story about this remarkable church right here in Chennai. ECI Zion Church stands as a testament to faith and history in the Chintadripet area. It is one of the oldest churches here.
Founded in 1847 by US missionaries, ECI Zion Church holds a special place in Chennai’s religious heritage. It is the oldest church built by US missionaries in the city. Imagine the dedication of those early missionaries. They traveled far to establish this beacon of Christianity.
The church’s original Gothic architecture is a sight to behold. Though it was rebuilt in 2003, its historical character remains. The Gothic style reflects its 19th-century origins. It is a peaceful contrast to the modern city around it.
ECI Zion Church houses the second oldest bell in Chennai. This bell was installed in 1878. The Christian Missionary Society of London sent it here. Imagine the sound of that bell ringing out across Chintadripet, calling people to prayer. The bell’s inscription indicates it was built by J Warner and Sons in London. It was lovingly restored in 2008.
Inside ECI Zion Church, you would have found a pipe organ. It was installed in 1895. Artisans from England restored it. Think of the music that once filled this space.
Originally, the church was smaller. It was built by Dr. John Scudder and Rev. Miron Winslow. They were American missionaries returning from Jaffna in Sri Lanka. In 1878, they sold the church to the Church Mission Society of London for Rs. 10,000.
Interestingly, another account claims the church’s origins date back to 1734. Governor George Mortin Pith is said to have settled 230 weaver families nearby. They produced cotton fabric.
The second pastor of ECI Zion Church was Rev. WT Sathianathan in 1862. His family continued to serve for five generations. WD Clarke, Sathianathan’s son-in-law, took over after 30 years of service. His son Samuel Clarke followed him. Samuel’s son Sundar Clarke then continued the legacy.
Today, the Diocese of Madras of the Church of South India administers the church. Mass takes place here from Monday to Friday at 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. On Saturdays, mass is at 5 p.m. On Sundays, services are at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. The church celebrates its festival during Christmas for eight days. The celebration begins with flag hoisting on December 24. It ends with a feast and religious lectures.
ECI Zion Church celebrated its 150th year in December 2003. As we stand here, remember the generations who have passed through these doors. Think of the prayers, the hymns, and the community that has been nurtured here. This place is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith.
