“A beacon of hope.” That’s how many describe Echo Park United Methodist Church. For over a century, this iconic church has stood at the corner of Alvarado and Reservoir Streets. It’s more than just a building. It’s a cornerstone of the Echo Park community.
Echo Park United Methodist Church’s story began in 1906. The congregation first met in a small building. People called it “the little brown church.” It was located up the hill on Reservoir Street. As the church grew, they needed more space. Members purchased land at Alvarado and Reservoir.
In 1923, the current building was constructed. Its golden dome became a landmark. It was visible from freeways around Echo Park. For 100 years, the church served God and the community. The Echo Park United Methodist Church became a hub for various activities. Weddings and regular services were held here. The church opened its doors to the El Salvadorean immigrant community in the 1980s. The church provided shelter and support.
Echo Park United Methodist Church is a reconciling congregation. It welcomes all worshipers. This is regardless of sexual orientation. The church works toward full participation for everyone in the United Methodist Church.
The California-Pacific Conference supports the church. It provides information about the denomination. It also publishes a calendar of events for UMC churches across the region.
In early 2023, disaster struck. Atmospheric rivers caused extensive damage. An assessment revealed the church tower was in danger. Structural engineers advised immediate closure. Church leaders made the difficult decision. They closed the building for all activities. This included worship services and community gatherings. Social services and twelve-step groups were also affected. The church’s priority was everyone’s safety.
The closure has been hard for the congregation. They are exploring options for the future. They need to raise funds for repairs and rebuilding. The Echo Park United Methodist Church remains committed. It wants to be a vital presence in Echo Park. The church plans to rebuild. It will once again be a center for community life. Celebration, organizing, healing, and worship will return.
