Nestled at the foot of the Schönberg, Ebringen greets you. This village, brimming with history, boasts the title of the oldest documented rural community in the region. A simple transaction, a gift of vineyard land to the Abbey of St. Gall sometime between 716 and 721 AD, marked Ebringen’s entry into recorded history. This very act, documented in a contract mentioning “Eberingen,” also confirms the existence of viticulture here, a tradition that continues to define Ebringen. Over centuries, Ebringen evolved into the heart of St. Gall’s southwestern holdings. It became the seat of the abbey’s local administration. The monks’ constant presence shaped the village, interrupted only between 1349 and 1621 when the land was granted as a fief to various noble families. Upon their return, the abbey strengthened its administration. They constructed the striking Ebringen Schloss between 1711 and 1713, replacing the old provost’s building. Today, this grand Schloss serves as Ebringen’s Rathaus, a tangible link to its rich past. But Ebringen’s story begins even earlier. The “Scharretenacker,” an Alemannic burial ground discovered in 1825, reveals a community thriving here long before written records. The site, the first systematically explored burial ground in southern Baden, housed over 200 graves. These graves, spanning the late 6th to early 8th centuries, whisper tales of Ebringen’s earliest inhabitants. Ebringen’s past is etched not only in earth but also in stone and timber. The ruins of Schneeburg castle, perched on the Schönberg, are a stark reminder of the nobility who once held sway here. Grand buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries dot the village. They testify to Ebringen’s importance as a wine-growing center. Among these architectural gems are the “Rottenmünsterhof,” a former monastery estate, the “Bollingerhaus,” and numerous half-timbered and gabled houses, many lovingly restored in recent years. Ebringen is more than just its Schloss, its vineyards, or its ancient stones. It’s a living testament to a community deeply rooted in its past.
