Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Of Ghana Osu stands as a powerful symbol. It represents the enduring spirit of Christianity in Ghana. Its story begins not here but far earlier. In 1503 Portuguese traders introduced Christianity. Their efforts faded though. By the 18th century Christianity had made little impact.

The arrival of the Basel Missionary Society in 1828 marked a turning point. Their mission wasn’t just about spreading the Gospel. They promoted education agriculture and trade too. They settled at Christiansborg then occupied by the Danes. The Danes invited them to address the spiritual needs of the growing mulatto population.

The early years were challenging. Disease claimed many missionaries. Between 1828 and 1850 only fourteen adults converted. The surviving missionary Andreas Riis moved to Akropong for better health. The Osu mission continued. The Osu church itself was founded in 1847.

Then came the British bombardment of 1854. The Basel Mission station was severely damaged. Many people fled to Abokobi. Thirty missionaries and converts established a new mission there. Abokobi became a model Christian community. It demonstrated Christian living. From Abokobi the Osu station was rebuilt in 1856.

The old chapel proved too small. Its proximity to the sea caused problems. The noise of the waves interfered with services. The town expanded away from the old site. So the decision was made to build a new chapel.

Fundraising began around 1898. The congregation and missionaries raised money. The Basel Mission Committee even released funds from their Poor Fund. This was unusual. They were impressed by the locals’ efforts.

Karl Epting a missionary architect designed the new church. Construction progressed rapidly. Many Osu people volunteered their services. By July 1902 the walls were completed. The tower reached 85 feet. The gallery accommodated 200 people.

The opening and dedication took place on October 19 1902. A farewell service was held at the old site. Then a jubilant procession moved to the new Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Of Ghana Osu. The old chapel’s stones were used to build the new one. It was a symbolic passing of the torch.

The new chapel was filled. Even the Acting Governor of the Gold Coast attended. The event was a celebration of faith and community. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Of Ghana Osu. Its impact continues to this day. Its story is one of perseverance faith and the enduring power of community.
