Ebenezer AME Church wasn’t always an African Methodist Episcopal church. It began its life under the Presbyterian Board of City Missions. Then in 1903 it found a new home a new purpose. Its transformation reflects the resilience and enduring spirit of its community.

Rev MH Hollins became Ebenezer’s first minister. Under his guidance the church grew from a humble mission to a thriving congregation. Many pastors followed each leaving their own unique mark. Rev TJ Miles remodeled and enlarged the building. Rev AFB Horry oversaw the purchase of a parsonage and the addition of an annex. Rev RS Lawrence presided over the church’s greatest growth adding a pipe organ still in use today.

The church faced its share of challenges. The old building was demolished in 1948. But the faith of the congregation remained unshaken. They held services at Shaw Center while their new modern church was built at a cost of ninety-seven thousand dollars. This new Ebenezer AME Church reflects the community’s dedication and prosperity.

But Ebenezer AME Church isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about community. It’s about the countless individuals who worshipped within its walls. The countless stories of faith hope and perseverance. The church has always been a center for community action. The establishment of a kindergarten a day care center and affordable housing projects demonstrate this. The Charleston Development Academy an innovative primary school further underscores the church’s commitment to education.
