“Hitherto hath the Lord helped us” This phrase echoes through the very stones of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Right here in Accra Ghana stands a testament to faith perseverance and the power of prayer.

Ebenezer Baptist Church wasn’t built overnight. Its story began in 1976. Missionaries Pastor and Mrs Lyle Baylis laid its foundation. They chose the name Ebenezer a biblical name meaning “the stone of help”. It perfectly reflected their journey.

Their first service was held in a rented house. Only five people attended. They faced challenges. Their rental house was needed by the owners. The search for a new location was difficult. Landlords constantly changed their minds. Yet their faith never wavered.

God provided. A place at 10 Owl Lane became their new home. Two young men Charles Seyram and Alfred Ofosu-Asante were key figures in the early days. The church grew rapidly. A tabernacle was built to accommodate the growing congregation. This marked another milestone in their history.

Twelve people were baptized in 1978. The church officially became a New Testament church with twenty-two charter members. Today only three of those original members remain. Other missionaries like Rev Bob and Ruth Watterson continued to support the church. They established youth groups. Others provided training for Sunday school teachers.

The search for a permanent building intensified. Major Nyanor secured land through the State Housing Corporation. He secured the current church location from Nii Klu Tsuru the Teshie Mankralo. In 1985 Alfred Ofosu-Asante became the pastor marking a shift from missionary to Ghanaian leadership. A choir was formed. Many people contributed to its success including Mrs Esther Ofori Mr Edward Dua Agyeman Mr John Yankey and Mr Joseph Therson-Cofie. Leaphia Darko also played a significant role in the church’s growth.

In 1994 the church moved to its permanent location. Pastor Ofosu-Asante was ordained. Ebenezer Baptist School Complex opened in 2004. It started small but today boasts over 700 pupils and 40 staff members.

Ebenezer Baptist Church’s story isn’t just about buildings. It’s about unwavering faith a commitment to community and the enduring power of God’s grace. As you stand before this church reflect on the journey. It is a journey of faith resilience and growth. A journey that continues to inspire generations. Indeed hitherto hath the Lord helped them.
