Here stands a granite testament. It honors the brave souls of Ebbw Vale who served in World War One. The Ebbw Vale War Memorial is more than just stone. It is a symbol of gratitude and remembrance.

The Ebbw Vale War Memorial features a life-sized statue. It depicts an Australian “Digger” in full marching kit. This iconic figure stands above crossed British and Australian flags. The statue rests on a pedestal of white Helidon sandstone. A square granite base supports this pedestal. Brown sandstone pilasters with Corinthian capitals add to the memorial’s design.

Recessed marble plaques adorn each face of the pedestal. These plaques bear the names of twenty-two local volunteers. The Ebbw Vale War Memorial particularly honors members of the local soccer team. Among them are William Jeffrey, Peter Jeffrey, and H. Mills.

Imagine the scene on Saturday, May 11, 1918. A large crowd gathered for the unveiling. His Excellency, Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams, performed the ceremony. Residents of Ebbw Vale erected the memorial. They wanted to show their appreciation. They honored soldiers returning home and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Queensland Times described the memorial as a “handsome piece of work”. It stands approximately 10ft tall. The monument was manufactured at A. L. Petrie’s monumental works in Toowong. Major Clatworthy spoke about the district’s proud record.

Time has passed. The Ebbw Vale War Memorial received restoration in 2003. Cr Owen John Nugent OAM, Mayor of Ipswich City Council, led the effort. The Ebbw Vale Memorial Committee and the Bundamba ANZAC Observance Committee assisted. Cr Trevor Nardi, Member for Division 4, also contributed.

Among the names listed are William Breslin. He was a Private with service number 3252. He served in the 9th Infantry Battalion. James Campbell Gilmour is also remembered. He was a Lance Corporal with service number 1955. He also served in the 9th Infantry Battalion.
