Ever wonder where Scotland’s locomotives go for a check-up? That would be Eastfield Depot. Eastfield TMD stands for Traction Maintenance Depot. It was the main heavy locomotive maintenance depot for Scotland for many years.
Eastfield Depot sits two miles north of Glasgow Queen Street station. It’s right on the main line from Glasgow to Edinburgh. Eastfield’s story is one of change and adaptation. It reflects the evolving needs of Scotland’s railways.
Once upon a time, Eastfield was a steam shed under British Railways. Its depot code was 65A. In 1973, it transitioned to a diesel depot with the code ED under the TOPS scheme.
In 1987, Eastfield was a bustling hub. Classes 20, 26, 27, 37, and 47 locomotives called it home. DMU Classes 101 and 104 were also based here. Even Class 08 shunters found a place to park. Eastfield had a wheel lathe for repairs. It also housed two snowploughs ready for winter. The depot’s logo featured a Scottie dog. Though some say it looked more like a West Highland White Terrier.
The early 1990s brought significant change. Eastfield Depot closed. The buildings were demolished. Locomotives were reallocated to other depots.
But Eastfield’s story didn’t end there. In the early 2000s, First ScotRail built a new depot. It was smaller than the original. This new Eastfield serviced Classes 158 and 170 DMUs.
The decline in freight flows contributed to changes at Eastfield. The rundown of steel-making facilities in Scotland impacted the depot. The closure of Eastfield reflected a reduction in locomotive maintenance requirements. Modern trains like Class 158s replaced older locomotive-hauled services. New heavy-haul diesel Class 60 locomotives reduced maintenance needs.
British Rail reviewed Eastfield’s position for some time. They considered various options for its future. Ultimately, closure was deemed the most cost-effective solution.
