Founded in 1924 under Reverend Gilliams’s leadership Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church began its journey at 800 Houston Avenue. This area was then known as the “Red Quarters”. The church’s early years were marked by several moves. It relocated to Short Texas Avenue then to 15th Street. A significant windstorm forced another move to Marion Anderson Avenue. These early relocations highlight the church’s resilience and adaptability. Each move represents a new chapter in the church’s history a testament to the faith and determination of its congregation.
Reverend Roach served as pastor from 1926 to 1928. Reverend S M Franklin followed but resigned due to unforeseen circumstances. Reverend Broxton served as acting pastor until Reverend Franklin’s return later that year. These shifts in leadership underscore the challenges and transitions that often accompany the growth of a religious institution. The church’s dedication to its spiritual mission remained constant through all these changes.
A major turning point came in 1955. Under Reverend Rufus Collins’s guidance the church was sold. A new sanctuary was built at 300 West 13th Street. Reverend Collins served until 1959. His tenure marked a period of significant physical expansion for Eastern Star. This expansion reflects the growing congregation’s need for a larger more suitable space for worship.
Reverend Elijah Williams served as acting pastor after Reverend Collins. Reverend Luther B Wade became pastor on June 7 1959. Under his leadership another sanctuary was purchased at 548 East 15th Street in 1964. Reverend Wade’s long tenure spanned decades of growth and change. He oversaw many important developments in the church’s history.
In 1979 a vision to build a new sanctuary was given to the congregation. This vision finally came to fruition in 1991. Services were held in the new debt-free sanctuary. A “Victory Celebration” was held in October of that year. This reflects the culmination of years of planning fundraising and construction. It showcases the congregation’s unwavering faith and commitment.
The old sanctuary located behind the new one was demolished in 1992. This cleared the way for “Phase 2” the construction of an educational wing and fellowship hall. Construction began immediately following an informal groundbreaking ceremony. This phase was completed in 1994. Both projects were completed without incurring debt another testament to the congregation’s dedication.
The church parking lot was completed in 1995. A new marquee was erected later that year. The church continued to grow. New ministries were added throughout the years. The church acquired more property purchased two Ford vans and organized various ministries. Through hurricanes and challenges the Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church persevered. It has continued to serve its community.
Pastor Lloyd W Scott Sr retired in 2022 after 33 years of leadership. Reverend Vester Thompson Jr was installed as pastor in July 2022. In 2024 the church invested in an electronic marquee. New ministries were added including one for members 65 and older and one for singles. The church continues to adapt and evolve meeting the changing needs of its community. Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church’s history is a powerful story of faith resilience and service. It is a place of worship and a cornerstone in the community.
