Founded in 1900 Eastern Star Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Initially known as New Zion Baptist Church it began in a humble setting a Cotton Belt Railroad yard. From there the congregation moved from house to house a testament to their unwavering devotion.
Two dedicated women Sister Francis McGraw and Sister Estella Brown proposed the name Eastern Star Baptist Church a name that has resonated through the years. The church has seen many changes of location and leadership. Rev Oscar Samington served as the first pastor.
The church saw periods of growth and prosperity. It also faced challenges such as a devastating windstorm and an explosion in its heating system. Despite these setbacks the congregation persevered. New buildings were constructed and paid for debt-free through the collective effort of the community.
Under the leadership of Rev A L Gee the current building was erected. This was a momentous occasion for the church marking a significant step in its history. The burning of the mortgage was a joyous celebration signifying the dedication and hard work of the members.
Eastern Star Baptist Church has had several pastors each contributing to its growth and development. Rev E L Harris served the longest tenure 22 years a testament to his dedication and impact. Rev L W Scott Sr’s leadership saw the construction of a new sanctuary and educational wing again paid for debt-free. His retirement in 2022 marked the end of a long era. Rev Vester Thompson Jr was installed as pastor.
Beyond the physical structures the church’s true strength lies in its community. It has fostered numerous ministries supporting the youth families and the wider community. The church played a vital role in helping its community after Hurricane Harvey in 2017. It provided essential services including a laundromat showers and meals.
