Eastern Province is one of Rwanda’s five provinces. It was formed in 2006. It includes parts of former provinces. Kibungo and Umutara are now part of Eastern Province. Kigali Rural and Byumba contribute as well.
The capital city of the Eastern Province is Rwamagana. Seven districts make up the province. They include Bugesera, Gatsibo, and Kayonza. Ngoma, Kirehe, Nyagatare, and Rwamagana are also districts here.
Akagera National Park resides partly in this province. It is home to the famous Big Five. Elephants, hippos, and giraffes roam here. Antelopes, zebras, lions, and leopards also live here. With luck, you might spot a rhino too. This park is jointly managed. The Rwanda Development Board and African Parks work together.
Bugesera is in the southeastern part of Rwanda. It is known for birdwatching. Rumira, Kamatana, and Mbuganzeri attract birdwatchers. Spot the Papyrus Gonolek. Find Green Sandpipers. Marsh Sandpipers and Purple Swamphens also live here. See Common Moorhens too.
Lake Muhazi lies in the eastern part of Rwanda. It is long and shallow. It stretches across much of the Eastern Province. Its western edge borders the Northern Province and Kigali City. This lake offers a peaceful escape.
Lake Cyohoha South sits on the border. It divides Burundi and Rwanda. In Rwanda, it is Cyohoha South. This distinguishes it from Cyohoha North. Cyohoha North is smaller and lies to the north. Boat riding and camping are popular here.
The Akanyaru River is a key feature. It is the main tributary of the Nyabarongo River. It starts in the highlands of Rwanda and Burundi. It flows east and then north. The river marks the border between the two countries. It joins the Nyabarongo River.
Nyamata means “place of milk.” It comes from Kinyarwanda words. “Nya-” means “of.” “Amata” means “milk.” Nyamata has several points of interest. The Nyamata Genocide Memorial Centre is here. You can also find the Nyamata Town Council offices. The central market is a hub of activity. Branches of the Bank of Kigali and Urwego Opportunity Bank are available. Bugesera International Airport is near Rilima.
Ntarama Memorial is significant. It is one of Rwanda’s six National Genocide Memorial Sites. The church holds remains of 5,000 people. They died here. Clothing and artifacts are on display.
