“Let your light shine” That’s the motto of Eastbank Academy. A powerful message echoing through this very building. Right here on Academy Street in Glasgow. You see Eastbank Academy? It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story etched in time.

Founded in 1894 as a senior secondary school Eastbank Academy was initially considered too grand for the small village of Shettleston. Locals even called it “Scott’s Folly” after Dr Alexander Scott who proposed it. The school grew quickly. An annex was added in 1911. It housed primary education until 1936. The school continued to expand. It became a comprehensive school after merging with Wellshot Junior Secondary.

The original red sandstone building along with pre-fabricated structures eventually fell into disrepair. Thanks to the GEAR initiative a new state-of-the-art building was constructed. It opened in 1985. The open-plan design was cutting edge. Science and practical departments were large open workshops instead of individual classrooms.

The old 1894 building was repurposed in 1989. It became home to John Wheatley College. Later it was used as office space and for community groups. Eastbank Academy has had many head teachers. Jim Dalziel served the longest almost 27 years. John Wilson was the only head teacher to die in office.

The school’s motto Splendeat Lux comes from Matthew Chapter 5 Verse 16. It means “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works”. Eastbank Academy has produced notable alumni. These include musicians politicians actors and journalists. Each has made their own mark on the world. Their success continues to inspire students today.

Look around you. Eastbank Academy stands tall. It’s a testament to the power of education. It’s a place where generations of Glaswegians have learned and grown. It’s a beacon of light shining brightly on Academy Street. Their legacy continues to inspire. Let your own light shine bright.
