“East Saint Matthew Baptist Church is a welcoming place of worship.” That’s what you’ll find on the internet. But let’s delve deeper into the story of this spiritual home.

East Saint Matthew Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its roots stretch back to 1868. Black members of the community yearned for “Their Own Church”. Rowen Rogers of New Hope Baptist Church donated an acre of land. This act of generosity set the stage for the church’s establishment.

In 1871, the congregation completed a log church. It became known as “St. Matthew Baptist Church”. Some people called it the “Little White Church” on the side of the road. Reverend George Perry served as the first pastor. He guided the church from 1871 to 1882.

As the congregation grew, the need for a larger space became apparent. In 1957, renovations began to expand the church. Services were held in the basement during reconstruction.

Reverend Ronald E. Avery became the pastor in 1981. Under his leadership, membership soared. This surge in numbers prompted an expansion of the sanctuary in 1984. Additional classrooms and a remodeled Fellowship Hall were added.

The church embraced a vision of community service as the millennium approached. In 2001, a plan to construct a new place of worship was set in motion. Through faith and hard work, the vision materialized. Also in 2001, the Community Center, known as the “St. Matthew Rosenwald School” was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

November 3, 2002 marked a significant milestone. One hundred and thirty-one years after the “Little White Church”, a new facility opened. It boasted a 1200-seat sanctuary, a media center, a conference area, and new offices. New classrooms were also added.

East Saint Matthew Baptist Church has expanded its ministry over the years. Numerous ministries work towards building God’s Kingdom. Membership continues to grow annually. The church purchased three buses. These buses transport members to services and church events. A fully equipped computer lab provides educational support. The church extends love to the community. They have outreach programs like Meals of Love and Ruth’s Closet. Children’s Church and Gen-Z Teen Church nurture the youth.

In 2016, the Technology Committee created a logo for East Saint Matthew Baptist Church. Online giving was added to the website in 2018. The 2020 pandemic led to online church services.

Thanks to Pastor Dr. Avery’s vision, the church acquired land. They plan to build a Family Life Center. They continue to walk by faith.

East Saint Matthew Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith, community, and service. It stands as a beacon of hope. It continues to evolve and adapt. The church remains a vital part of San Antonio.
