In 2002 two historic churches merged. This created East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church. One congregation was primarily white the other African-American. This unique blend of cultures formed a vibrant new community.
East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church stands as a testament to unity. The merger wasn’t without its challenges. Some doubted its success. However the combined congregations found strength in their shared faith. The resulting church is a beautiful example of overcoming differences.
Before the merger East Point First UMC faced dwindling membership. Its aging building and members moving away were factors. Mallalieu UMC needed a larger space. They planned to renovate their Randall Street building. The merger solved both churches’ problems.
The Board of Trustees from both churches led the merger. They worked together creating a new name and a merger document. Reverend Minnie T. Robinson became Senior Pastor. Reverend Horace Couch a retired minister assisted her. The Randall Street facility was sold. The combined church found a new home at 2651 Church Street.
East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church now thrives. It reflects the rich histories and traditions of its origins. It is a multicultural congregation. It offers a welcoming worship experience for all. Its weekly schedule includes Sunday services Bible studies and choir rehearsals. The church’s location near the East Point Marta Station makes it easily accessible. It’s a place where people meet Jesus and share their faith. East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church is truly a place of hope and unity. Its story continues to inspire. It shows that even from challenges God’s plans are unstoppable.
