What brought fifteen souls together in the home of Reverend and Sister M.L. Holiday on a Sunday in January 1976? It was the founding spirit of East Park Baptist Church. Right here where you stand now, those fifteen faithful individuals gathered for their very first service. They probably didn’t realize it then, but they were planting the seed for something much larger. Originally chartered as the Houston East Park Missionary Baptist Church, this congregation soon outgrew the Holiday home. Their journey led them to the familiar walls of Tidwell Elementary School’s auditorium for a time. On March 14th, 1976, the church was officially organized in a momentous ceremony. Reverend Essie Harris of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church led the proceedings, and a powerful message was delivered by Reverend K.C. Jones from Greater Star Baptist Church. Just imagine the hope and excitement buzzing in the air! It wasn’t long before East Park Baptist Church found its current home right here on Tidwell Road. The congregation first worshipped in a modest wood-framed structure on this very spot in April 1976. But their faith, much like the church itself, was meant to grow. By 1980, they broke ground on a new sanctuary, finally dedicating the space they had worked so hard for in a beautiful ceremony that November. East Park Baptist Church stands today as a testament to the enduring strength of faith and community.
