Dissatisfied with neglect, a group of citizens sought change. They wanted a larger say in governing their district. This led to the establishment of East Newark.
East Newark is a borough in Hudson County New Jersey. It is the second-smallest municipality by total area in the state. The Borough of East Newark was established on July 2 1895. It was formed from portions of Kearny.
East Newark’s story is one of community and independence. It all began with a desire for self-determination. Residents felt their interests were not being adequately addressed by Kearny. They wanted more control over their tax dollars. Edward Kenny spearheaded the movement to secede. He later became East Newark’s first mayor. Legend says Kenny made a midnight run to Trenton by horse-drawn coach. He secured legislation for the borough’s formation.
The vote to incorporate East Newark passed on July 2 1895. News of the secession spread quickly. People cheered and tossed hats in the air. A brass band paraded through the streets. East Newark was born.
East Newark is bordered by Kearny and Harrison. Newark lies to the west across the Passaic River. The borough covers only 0.13 square miles.
East Newark quickly established essential services. A borough school, a fire department, and a police force were created. The first school classes were held in 1895. They took place at the Bethel Chapel. The Borough School officially opened in 1896. It still educates children today.
The Fire Department initially consisted of a 40-man volunteer force. It was divided into two companies. The police force was established with a chief and three marshals.
The Clark Thread Company and the Mile End Spool and Cotton Company were key to East Newark’s economy. These mills attracted English and Scottish settlers seeking work. In 1931, Clark Thread Company left East Newark. The East Newark Industrial Complex now stands on the site.
Saint Anthony’s R.C. Church was built in the early 1900s. A fire destroyed the original structure in 1935. The church was rebuilt on the same site.
East Newark has a rich history despite its small size. It is a community that values its independence. East Newark continues to thrive by meeting the needs of its residents.
