Really?” a child’s voice piped up. “That’s what East Lansdowne used to be?” We’re standing in East Lansdowne, a borough in Delaware County, a stone’s throw from Philadelphia, and it’s hard to imagine it as anything but this bustling community. East Lansdowne, incorporated in 1911, boasts a rich history woven into the very fabric of its streets and homes. This small borough, a mere 0.2 square miles, holds a population of around 2,700, a testament to its dense settlement. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner, a story that begins with a single family farm. This farm, once part of Upper Darby Township, belonged to Dr. George Smith, a prominent figure in the region’s development. Dr. Smith wore many hats: State Senator, Delaware County Judge, advocate for public schools, and even author of a book on the county’s history. His influence resonated throughout the area, shaping its growth and future. In 1902, the Smith family farm was purchased by the Wood, Harmon Company, a real estate firm led by Clifford B. Harmon, a pioneer aviator and balloonist. Harmon envisioned a new community, and he named it East Lansdowne. He brought in civil engineers to map out the 130 acres, dividing it into streets and lots. The lots were offered at incredibly affordable prices, with no taxes, mortgages, or interest for a year. This sparked a rapid development, and by 1903, thirty homes and a store had already sprung up. East Lansdowne continued to grow, reaching its peak population of around 3,500 in the 1950s. Even before its official incorporation, the residents formed the East Lansdowne Improvement Association in 1904, a group that laid the groundwork for the borough’s future governance and even established the first fire company. This sense of community remains strong in East Lansdowne. As you walk through the borough today, you’ll see a mix of architectural styles, from Victorian Vernacular to Craftsman Bungalow and American Foursquare homes, many retaining their original features. The tree-lined streets and residential character create a unique, walkable environment. East Lansdowne also holds the distinction of having the oldest 4th of July parade in Delaware County, a testament to its enduring spirit and community pride.
