Forty thousand daily bus riders. That’s the number that transformed East Gun Hill Road. Before the redesign East Gun Hill Road was one of the most dangerous streets in the Bronx. Roughly five people were injured every week in crashes. The road was a vital artery. It connected communities hospitals and essential services. It also connected people to jobs and healthcare.

East Gun Hill Road’s history stretches back to the American Revolution. A cannon was placed on a hill near Woodlawn Cemetery. Colonists fired it at the British. The hill became known as Gun Hill. The road itself was initially named Kingsbridge Road. It was part of the Boston Post Road. The name changed to Gun Hill Road in 1875. It didn’t always extend to the Hutchinson River Parkway. Extensions were added segment by segment until 1938.

In the mid-1960s plans for a City Line Expressway were proposed. This would have run near Gun Hill Road. The project never materialized. Another plan the Gun Hill Crosstown Highway was proposed in 1941. That too was abandoned.

The recent redesign of East Gun Hill Road is a remarkable achievement. Over three miles of bus lanes were added. Twenty intersections were redesigned. This focused on pedestrian safety and traffic calming. Concrete bus boarding islands were installed. They separate bus lanes from traffic. This makes boarding buses safer and faster.

The project included community input. Dozens of meetings were held over three years. The final design incorporates feedback from residents and businesses. The goal was to create a safer and more efficient thoroughfare. Bus lanes were strategically designed. Businesses can still receive deliveries without blocking bus traffic. The implementation of bus-mounted cameras will further enhance enforcement. This will result in even faster and more reliable bus service.

Today East Gun Hill Road is a testament to progress. It is a safer and more efficient route for commuters and pedestrians alike. It showcases the power of collaboration between the city government and its community. This has resulted in a significant improvement in the lives of many Bronx residents. The transformation of East Gun Hill Road serves as an inspiring example of urban planning that prioritizes people and safety. The result is a road more conducive to the needs of its users.
