Founded in 1965 the East County Christian Center has a rich history. It all began when Tim and Beverly LaHaye saw a need for Christian education. They were concerned about secular changes in California’s public schools. Their children’s education was at stake. They decided to found Christian Unified Schools of San Diego. This was a bold move. Private Christian schools were unheard of at that time.

The LaHayes faced challenges. They had to overcome opposition. They spoke out against new legislation. They wanted to protect children’s traditional biblical worldview. Many local pastors and parents joined their cause. They worked hard to create an alternative education system.

The first Christian High School opened its doors. It started small with just 46 students. They were in the 9th 10th and 11th grades. The school offered a full curriculum. There were art classes a lab and even a yearbook.

The school grew rapidly. It expanded to include a junior high school and later an elementary school. However its original campus quickly became overcrowded. The church and school needed more space. They were determined to grow and thrive. They purchased a large property in El Cajon. This offered ample room for all its ministries.

The East County Christian Center’s first graduation ceremonies took place at Scott Memorial Baptist Church in North Park. They later moved to an outdoor location. Finally the ceremonies found a new home. The Worship Center of Shadow Mountain Community Church now hosts them. A unique graduation tradition continues today. Students choose between caps and gowns or tuxedos and white dresses for girls. This choice reflects the school’s individuality.
