“This is church?” Imagine those words echoing here at East Bethelehem Lutheran Church. They capture a pivotal moment in this church’s story.

East Bethelehem Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith, transition and community. It is a place where different cultures have converged. Its walls have heard prayers in multiple languages.

Once, this very spot was home to a different Bethlehem Lutheran Church. It served a community of German immigrants since 1887. But as generations moved to the suburbs the congregation dwindled. By the early 2000s only a small group remained.

Elmer Engel treasurer of the church remembers those days. He recalls a cavernous sanctuary built for 2000 now hosting a tiny flock. Yet their spirit remained strong. They made a difficult decision. They would close the congregation. The church and school would be sold. It was a moment of sadness but also one of hope.

Meanwhile a Spanish-speaking congregation Iglesia Luterana Pan de Vida sought a new home. Led by Deaconess Teresita Rodriguez and Rev Gregory Lorenz they ministered to immigrants in Mexicantown. Their storefront location felt inadequate. It lacked the sacredness they desired.

When they learned of Bethlehem Lutheran Church’s availability they saw an opportunity. It seemed impossible. They made an offer far below the asking price. To their surprise it was accepted. It felt like a divine intervention.

In 2008 a Service of Rededication and Ministry Transition marked a new chapter. Members of the old Bethlehem symbolically passed on items to Pan de Vida. The Bible altar cloths keys to the church. Hymns filled the air. A mariachi band played. Two cultures merged. The church became known as Pan de Vida en Belén. Bethlehem lives on in a new form.

Today East Bethelehem Lutheran Church is a community hub. It partners with a local elementary school. It hosts music art and study programs. Dance groups and music organizations use its facilities. Volunteers offer English and sewing classes. All activities include devotions and prayer in Spanish.

East Bethelehem Lutheran Church embodies a spirit of service. Everyone here is seen as a missionary. Whether serving or being served. This church is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of faith. It continues to evolve with the community.
