The roar of the crowd. That’s how it always begins here at East Bengal Ground. A wave of red and gold.

East Bengal Ground isn’t just a stadium. It’s a living monument to Kolkata’s vibrant football culture. It’s a place where history echoes with every cheer. It’s the historical home of the legendary East Bengal Club. Founded in 1920 the club quickly became more than just a team. It became a symbol of identity and hope for many.

Initially playing at Kumartuli Park the club needed its own space. A struggle ensued. The club’s founders fought for their rightful place in the Maidan. They eventually secured a share of the ground with Mohun Bagan. A fierce rivalry between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan ignited. This continues to be one of Asia’s biggest sports rivalries. The iconic red and gold colors of East Bengal’s jersey were chosen at the Whiteaway Laidlaw & Co. department store. They cost a hefty 80 rupees in 1920. Quite a sum back then.

East Bengal Ground has witnessed incredible moments. The 1930 protest march. Thousands of fans carrying flaming torches. This powerful image became the club’s emblem the Mawshal. A symbol of their unwavering passion.

The ground itself has evolved. Renovations in 1996 and 2016 modernized facilities. A new club office a cafe lounge and even elevators for members were added. The playing field was relaid. Floodlights were installed in 2018. The members gallery now boasts red and gold bucket seats. In 2023 a luxurious VVIP lounge was added.

More than just football matches the ground has hosted many other events. Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol held a promotional event there. WWE superstar Alberto Del Rio made an appearance. Even a Manchester United event graced the field. La Liga’s El Clasico was screened here for fans.
