Imagine stepping onto the grounds of Eaglesvale Senior School, a place steeped in history and brimming with life. Located in Harare, Zimbabwe, Eaglesvale Senior School is not just a school, but a testament to the spirit of resilience and education. Founded in 1911 as the Bulawayo Orphanage, this once-humble institution has had a long and fascinating journey.
The story of Eaglesvale Senior School is one of transformation and growth. It began as a small orphanage, finding its first home in Bulawayo. The Dutch Reformed Church then moved the school, renaming it Daisyfield, to a farm in Somabhula near Gweru, wanting to establish a location where the orphans could work.
In 1948, the school was moved again, this time to its current location in Harare. Built near the railway line for easy transport, the school was renamed Bothashof School in honor of H Botha, the son of Reverend A.J. Botha, a founding figure of the school. The school’s name has changed several times throughout its history, but its commitment to education has remained constant.
The school underwent significant changes during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1978, the school struggled to find students, forcing the Dutch Reformed Church to close its doors. Then, in 1982, the school reopened under the leadership of Mr. Stokes, reflecting the new Zimbabwean Government’s policy of education for all. That same year, the school’s enrollment increased to 400 in the Junior School and 800 in the Senior School, transforming it into a vibrant hub of learning.
Today, Eaglesvale Senior School thrives as a co-educational institution. The school boasts a diverse student body, a dedicated staff, and a commitment to delivering a well-rounded education. Today, Eaglesvale’s classrooms hum with activity, with students engaged in a wide range of subjects. Eaglesvale has come a long way from its humble beginnings, offering a vibrant and enriching learning environment for its students. You can feel the legacy of those who came before, but also the youthful energy of those who are shaping its future. As you walk through the school’s grounds, it’s not hard to imagine all the stories that have unfolded within its walls. It’s a reminder that education is truly transformative.
