In 1915, a grand edifice began to rise in downtown Salt Lake City. The Eagles Building, designed by Swedish architect Niels Edward Liljenberg, was destined to become a hub for the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. This wasn’t just any social club. The Eagles Building housed a group committed to progressive labor policies, offering free medical services and affordable insurance. Imagine the activity within these walls, the meetings, the gatherings, the spirit of camaraderie and social good. The Eagles Building thrived for over two decades. Then came the hard times of the Depression. In 1937, the Eagles were forced to sell their beloved building. The once vibrant Eagles Building sat empty, a silent testament to the economic hardship of the era. A few years later, in 1941, the American Legion breathed new life into the Eagles Building, making it their headquarters. This lasted until 1950 when Equitable Life Insurance Company took ownership, remaining until the mid-1980s. The spirit of community continued to flicker within the Eagles Building’s walls, even under new ownership. Fast forward to 1990. The Eagles Building underwent a significant transformation thanks to The Bay Entertainment, Inc. No longer a meeting place for fraternal orders or insurance companies, the Eagles Building pulsed with the rhythm of nightlife as a popular dance club. For those who remember Salt Lake City’s nightlife in the 90s and 2000s, The Bay at the Eagles Building was the place to be. More recently, Caffe Molise, a beloved Italian restaurant, has made the Eagles Building its home. Look up, and you can still see the majestic eagle perched in a second-story window. A reminder of the building’s rich and varied history. The Eagles Building stands at 404 South West Temple, a testament to the evolving spirit of Salt Lake City.
