“Did you know that this very spot housed a loan office?” I ask. This is the Eagle Saloon. Before it became a legendary New Orleans tavern in 1908 it was Jake Itzkovich’s Eagle Loan Office. Musicians often pawned their instruments here between gigs. It was a thriving hub. A melting pot of African-American Jewish and Chinese immigrants.

The Eagle Saloon’s name is a direct legacy of that loan office. Frank Douroux opened his second tavern here naming it after its predecessor. The building’s history stretches back even further to 1850. It’s a three-story brick and stucco building in the Neoclassical Revival style. Imagine the stories these walls could tell.

The Eagle Saloon wasn’t just a bar. It was a nexus for some of the most influential figures in early jazz. Buddy Bolden’s band minus Bolden himself played here. They called themselves the Eagle Band. The third floor housed a ballroom used by the Odd Fellows and Masonic Lodge for dances. Bolden Robichaux and Bunk Johnson all performed there. Think of the energy the music must have created.

The building also held significance beyond music. Louis Armstrong was arrested here on New Year’s Eve 1913 for firing a pistol. This led to his time at the Colored Waifs Home. That’s where he received his first formal musical training. His story is intertwined with this place.

The Eagle Saloon’s history isn’t just about music and arrests. It speaks to the vibrant community that surrounded it. The Odd Fellows an African American fraternal group used the upper floors for their dances and parades. This block was the heart of a lively neighborhood. Many important events occurred here.

Today the Eagle Saloon stands as a silent testament to a bygone era. It’s a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of New Orleans. A place where music thrived and communities gathered. A place that deserves to be remembered and celebrated. It’s more than just a building it’s a living legacy. The Eagle Saloon.
