Gazing up at the Eagle Gate, you might wonder what stories this monument holds. The Eagle Gate is more than just an arch. It is a symbol of Salt Lake City’s history. It stands at the intersection of State Street and South Temple.

Originally, the Eagle Gate marked the entrance to Brigham Young’s property. This was back in 1859. Brigham Young was a prominent figure in the early settlement of Salt Lake City. The gate was designed by Truman O. Angell and Hiram B. Clawson. Ralph Ramsay carved the original eagle from wood.

The Eagle Gate served a practical purpose. It kept strangers and Native Americans from Brigham Young’s property. Large wooden doors closed at night. These doors secured the Beehive House and Lion House. They also protected private offices and gardens.

The eagle and beehive symbolized industry in downtown Salt Lake City. The original eagle had a 16-foot wingspan. It rested on wooden arches and cobblestone pillars. Today, you can see this original eagle at the Daughters of Utah Pioneer museum.

Over the years, the Eagle Gate has been altered. In 1891, the wooden gates were removed. The entrance became a public street. The eagle received a copper plating and new stone pillars.

By 1960, the wood had deteriorated. The Eagle Gate was rebuilt in 1963. A larger bronze eagle replaced the original. This bronze eagle has a 20-foot wingspan and weighs 4,000 pounds. Grant R. Fairbanks was the sculptor.

The current Eagle Gate is a mid-century modern design. It is supported by four pillars with a steel frame. Metal panels cover the frame. A keystone with five-point stars sits atop the arch. The bronze eagle rests on a beehive on this keystone.

President David O. McKay dedicated the new Eagle Gate. He hoped the new eagle and beehive would receive divine protection. The Eagle Gate stands as a tribute to the pioneers.

The Eagle Gate is a reminder of Utah’s nickname “The Beehive State.” The beehive represents thrift and perseverance. It has been part of Utah’s identity since the Mormon pioneer era.

A time capsule lies on the monument’s eastern side. A plaque details the Eagle Gate’s history. The Eagle Gate connects the city’s pioneer legacy with its modern identity.

Today, the Eagle Gate inspires local businesses and buildings. It is one of Salt Lake City’s best-known landmarks. It bridges historical roots and modern design. The Eagle Gate continues to symbolize the industrious spirit of Utah. As you leave the Eagle Gate, remember its history. It is a gateway to the past and a symbol of the future.
