Bishop Ernest T. Dixon Jr. himself, a San Antonio native, became the first Black bishop in the Southwest Texas Conference. This very church, E T Dixon United Methodist Church, stands as a testament to his legacy. Founded in 1982 by Reverend Morris Daugherty, E T Dixon United Methodist Church initially went by the name Rigsby Road United Methodist Church. However, the church’s name was changed to honor Bishop Dixon, a man who broke barriers and inspired generations. The church’s journey began modestly, with services held in various locations around the city. From the East Side Multi-Purpose Center to the Sun Park Lane Senior Citizens Home and even Herman Hirsch Elementary School, the congregation persevered. Their dedication finally culminated in the construction of this very sanctuary, a beacon of faith and community in San Antonio. Today, E T Dixon United Methodist Church, affectionately known as “The Church on The Hill,” continues to serve its community. With Reverend Terrence K. Hayes at the helm, it remains a place where ordinary people strive to do extraordinary things, guided by their faith and love for God.
