In 1795, a grand mosque arose in Triplicane, Chennai. It was the E Islah Sazan Mosque, also known as the Wallajah Mosque. The Nawab of Arcot, Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, and his family commissioned this stunning structure. The E Islah Sazan Mosque showcases the Mughal architectural style. It’s built entirely of granite, a testament to the skill of the builders. No wood or iron was used in its construction. The mosque boasts two towering minarets and two gold-plated domes. Inside, a large prayer hall awaits, ready to welcome thousands of devotees. A large tank and open grounds provide ample space for worshippers, especially during festivals like Bakrid and Ramzan. An interesting fact about the E Islah Sazan Mosque is its connection to both Muslim and Hindu communities. The Nawab, known for his interfaith friendships, appointed a Hindu, Raja Makhhan Lal Bahdur Khirat, as his chief personal secretary. Khirat even composed a Persian chronogram that adorns the entrance to the prayer hall. Today, the Prince of Arcot Endowments Trust administers the mosque, and many of its staff members are Hindu.
