Initially, it was known as “The Sachs School”. Later, it became The Franklin School. The school has moved several times. In 1912, it ultimately moved to 18 West 89th Street.
In 1880, the New York School of Languages was founded. It was an academy of classical studies. Timothy Dwight, President of Yale University, asked the school to pioneer a math and science program. This was intended to replace traditional Greek and Latin as an entrance requirement. The New York School of Languages was later renamed Timothy Dwight School. This was in honor of that historic partnership.
Dwight School merged with the Bentley School in 1977. This added elementary and middle school programs to its curriculum. In 1993, Dwight School merged with the Franklin School. It then moved to its present location at 291 Central Park West. Dwight became the first school in North America in 1996. It offered the full International Baccalaureate program from preschool through grade 12.
Stephen H Spahn has been the school’s owner, chancellor, and headmaster since 1967. There are four co-educational divisions at Dwight School. The Riverside campus is for preschool and kindergarten. The Lower School is for grades 1 through 5. The middle school covers grades 6 through 8. The upper school includes grades 9 through 12.
Dwight School is selective in its admissions. Kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade are the largest entry points. Dwight offers rolling admissions for international families. This accommodates the wide range of academic calendars around the world.
The Dwight Schools are an international network of campuses and programs. These include Dwight School London, Shanghai Qibao Dwight High School, Dwight School Seoul, and Dwight School Dubai. Dwight School offers the International Baccalaureate program. This includes the IB Primary Years Program, the IB Middle Years Program, and the IB Diploma Program.
Dwight has an off-campus sports facility. It is called the Dwight School Athletic Center or DSAC. DSAC is equipped with a swimming pool and a basketball court. It also has a weight-lifting room.
