Charleston’s history stretches back thousands of years. Native American tribes first inhabited this land. It later became known as “The Holy City”. Charleston officially became a city in 1783. This marked a significant moment in its development.

Charleston has always been a major port city. It played a crucial role in early American history. The city was a major port in the slave triangle. Most enslaved Africans passed through Charleston. About 80% of African Americans can trace their ancestry through this city.

Charleston is home to many American firsts. These include the first museum, public college, playhouse, and golf club. The Charleston Museum was founded in 1773. It opened to the public in 1824. The College of Charleston was founded in 1770. It is the 13th oldest school in the country. America’s oldest theater opened in 1736. It is called the Dock Street Theatre. Charleston has a unique connection to Barbados. In 1670, British settlers arrived from Barbados. They were in search of supplies. They discovered sugarcane growing here. They settled in Charleston. The layouts of Charleston and Bridgetown are almost identical. Many Charleston streets were named after areas in Barbados. The architecture is also similar to Bridgetown’s 17th-century style.

Charleston is also known as the Holy City. It earned this name because of its many churches. The Anglican Church was dominant during the colonial era. The Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest of its kind. It is located in the Southern United States.

Even the symbol of hospitality is visible all over Charleston. The pineapple is everywhere. It is on porches, door knockers, and even as a fountain in Waterfront Park. Captains returning from sea would place pineapples on their porches. This welcomed guests they had not seen in a while.

Dutchman Island may seem small. But it is a silent witness to centuries of Charleston’s vibrant past. Its shores have seen the rise and fall of empires.
