Why was the Dutch Reformed Church in Gaborone established so much later than the church in Mochudi? Our journey through Botswana’s religious landscape brings us to the Dutch Reformed Church in Gaborone. While its presence might seem a given, its establishment in 1970 was a later chapter in a story that began decades earlier. The tale of the Dutch Reformed Church in Botswana begins not here, but in Mochudi. In 1877, Reverend Pieter Brink, a missionary from the Dutch Reformed Church, arrived in Mochudi, marking the church’s first foray into Botswana. The Bakgatla people, led by Chief Kgamanyane, had relocated from the Saulspoort area near the Pilanesberg in present-day South Africa. They settled in Mochudi on the banks of the Ngotwane River. Brink followed them, building the foundation for the Dutch Reformed Church amidst the challenges of a new land. Over time, the church grew, extending its reach beyond Mochudi to other towns and villages. However, it was the Societies Bill of 1973, enacted after Botswana’s independence, that significantly reshaped the church’s structure. The bill led to the recognition of a single entity: the Dutch Reformed Church in Botswana (DRCB). This meant that various congregations, including the Afrikaans-speaking congregation in Gaborone and the one in Lobatse, came together under the DRCB umbrella. This unification marked an important shift, consolidating the church’s presence throughout the nation and solidifying its identity as a uniquely Botswanan institution.
