Nestled amidst the vibrant tapestry of Mumbai, the Durga Mandir in Mazgaon stands as a testament to time and tradition. The Durga Mandir isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living story, etched into the very fabric of this city. Imagine a group of men carefully navigating a steep hill, their precious cargo a towering statue of the goddess Durga. This scene plays out every year at the Durga Mandir during Navratra. The narrow stairway, a mere 2.5 feet wide in places, adds to the challenge. One misstep could send the statue tumbling down the hill. The temple priests know this risk all too well. They are the keepers of this tradition. They understand the significance of a standing Durga idol, as a seated one would be impossible to maneuver up the narrow path. The current priest, Siddharth Shenvi, represents the sixth generation of his family to serve the Durga Mandir. He is a living encyclopedia of the temple’s history. He can trace its origins back centuries to a simple stone marked with vermilion. The first shrine, he says, was likely built by the Maratha military commander, Chimaji Appa, in the 18th century. The temple sits atop the hill, overlooking the city, much like the village goddess, or Gamdevi, it enshrines. Commuters on the Harbour line often offer a silent prayer as they pass by Dockyard Road, acknowledging the goddess’s presence. Unlike other temples dedicated to Durga, the Durga Mandir offers a unique experience for female devotees. They are allowed to personally place offerings in the goddess’s lap. It’s a tradition that draws former residents back to Mazgaon every Navratra, eager to reconnect with their roots and honor the goddess. The Durga Mandir also stands apart due to its peaceful nature. There are no animal sacrifices here, unlike some other temples. The nine days of Navratra are marked by daily aarti and darshans, culminating in the immersion of the idol on Vijayadashmi. The temple is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a living link to the past, a vibrant thread in the rich cultural tapestry of Mumbai.
