“Did you know that Durban North College wasn’t always located here on Prospect Hall Road?” I ask. The group leans in intrigued. Durban North College boasts a rich history stretching back far beyond this impressive campus. Its roots lie in the Albert Street Boys School in Durban established in 1911. This later became Stamford Hill Hoërskool an English-only school.

As the Afrikaans community grew so did the demand for an Afrikaans-medium school in areas like Durban North. Stamford Hill eventually became dual-medium but still faced limitations. Parents staged a remarkable “stay-in” strike in 1961 securing permission to offer classes from Grade 1 to 12. This event shows the community’s powerful commitment.

The school continued to grow rapidly exceeding its capacity by the late 1960s. Students even used Kings Park for athletics. The need for a new larger school became undeniable. Negotiations for a new site began. Initially a smaller site was proposed. However thanks to a cancelled high-rise development the school secured 17 acres. This included land from the farm “Paallaer” owned by Voortrekker Karel Landman. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 3 1969.

The naming process was interesting. Suggestions such as Goede Hoop Drommedaris and Reiger were considered. Ultimately the name Blye Vooruitsig meaning “Good Prospect” was chosen. It linked to Piet Retief’s words upon seeing KwaZulu-Natal. However the name was short-lived. It was changed to Afrikaanse Hoërskool Durban-Noord on October 26 1970.

After 1994 government policies prompted the school’s transformation. The name changed again to Durban North College in 1997 adopting a dual-medium language policy. The old Stamford Hill premises now house Livingstone Primary School. Today Durban North College stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. It is a high school primary school and pre-primary school (Toktokkie). It maintains high standards offering opportunities to all learners within a diverse community rooted in a Christian ethos. It’s a vibrant and thriving institution. This is a place that has built a strong future on a remarkable past.
