Hidden within the tapestry of Denver’s history lies a small hamlet, Dupont. More specifically, it’s nestled in Douglas County, a place with a story as explosive as the product it once produced. Dupont, or Louviers as it came to be known, owes its existence to the E. I. Du Pont de Nemours Company. In 1906, they sought a western outpost for their dynamite empire. They chose this spot, 26 miles south of Denver, a place then known simply as Toluca. The company transformed the quiet landscape into a bustling company town. They named it Louviers, after a village in France, a nod to the Du Pont family’s heritage. The company didn’t just build a factory; they built a community. Rows of houses, a church, a village club, all sprung up to accommodate the influx of workers. The location was strategic. Railroads provided easy transport, and Denver offered a plentiful labor pool. Douglas County, sparsely populated at the time, was the ideal spot for a dynamite factory. The Louviers Works, as the plant was called, quickly became a vital part of Colorado’s growth. It supplied explosives for mining, oil exploration, and road building, churning out an average of 584,375 pounds of explosives per month in its first year. Life in Louviers revolved around the company. Houses were assigned based on job title, from the modest homes in “the Flats” to the grander residences on “Capitol Hill.” The company store, the company school, even the company barber shop – all catered to the residents’ needs. DuPont offered low rents, provided electricity and coal, and even painted houses and hauled garbage. In return, they expected a model community, and Louviers, for the most part, complied. Despite the inherent danger of dynamite production, the Louviers Works maintained a surprisingly good safety record. The company prioritized safety, posting “rooster boards” celebrating accident-free days. Still, accidents happened. Explosions, though contained, were a grim reminder of the volatile nature of their work. By the 1960s, DuPont began to divest from Louviers. They sold the houses, and eventually, in 1971, the dynamite plant closed its doors. Yet, unlike many company towns, Louviers didn’t fade away. The residents stayed, finding work elsewhere but remaining committed to their unique community. Dupont, or Louviers, remains a testament to a bygone era. A time when a company shaped not just an industry but an entire town.
