What if I told you this artwork isn’t inside a museum but part of a church? Duomo dell’Ortica is home to an intriguing art installation. This isn’t your typical altarpiece. In 2005, English artist Mark Wallinger brought a modern touch to this historic space. He installed “Via Dolorosa” in the crypt, right beside the relics of Saint Charles Borromeo. Imagine the contrast: ancient relics and a modern video installation. This 18-minute film portrays the Passion of Christ. It uses scenes from Franco Zeffirelli’s famous film, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Wallinger’s work sparks a dialogue between old and new. It’s a reminder that art can transcend time and speak to us in powerful ways, even within the hallowed halls of Duomo dell’Ortica.
