Let’s step back in time. The story of Dunvegan Primary School began in January 1968. Miss J.C. Olive was the first principal. The school started in a prefabricated site in Hurlyvale. It quickly grew into a bustling hub for 280 pupils.
In 1970, Dunvegan Primary School officially opened at its current location. There were 678 pupils enrolled then. Dr. A.L. Kotzee, the Director of Education in the Transvaal, unveiled a plaque. This marked a big day for the school. Dunvegan Primary School continued to grow. Its commitment to both sports and education remained strong.
The school changed over the years. In 1991, Dunvegan Primary School became a “Model B” school. By 1992, it evolved into a “Model C” school. These changes reflected progress in its educational structure. Construction of the Betty McCreadie Media Centre began. This significantly improved the school’s resources. It provided a richer learning environment.
Dunvegan Primary School embraced technology in May 2000. It launched its website. This showed its forward-thinking approach.
In June 2002, the school said goodbye to old prefab classrooms. A new classroom wing was built. By December 2002, four modern classrooms were ready. There were also change rooms, a Tuckshop and a computer centre. These additions aligned with modern teaching methods.
From 2008 to 2011, the school upgraded its perimeter fencing. The original fence was replaced with a brick and palisade wall. This enhanced security and improved the school’s look.
Dunvegan Primary School offers many extracurricular activities. These range from sports to arts. These activities help pupils grow and develop. Sports include athletics, cricket, netball, soccer, swimming, table tennis and tennis. Younger pupils can enjoy scaled-down versions of these. The arts include chess, choir, drama, Eisteddfod, guitar, marimba, recorder and Orff.
The school also provides academic support. Assistance is available in English, Afrikaans and mathematics. Dunvegan Primary School is involved in community projects. A recent food collection drive showed its commitment to the neighbourhood.
