Ahoy there, mateys. Have you heard the tale of Dungeon Rock? This isn’t your typical rock. Dungeon Rock is a place of pirate legends, ghostly encounters, and buried treasure.
Dungeon Rock lies within the 2,200-acre Lynn Woods Reservation. This municipal park is one of New England’s largest.
Our story begins in the mid-1600s. A pirate named Thomas Veale supposedly hid here. He stashed his loot in a cave. He lived there for a while. Then, disaster struck. An earthquake destroyed the cave. Veale and his treasure were lost. The formation became known as Pirate’s Dungeon. Over time, it became Dungeon Rock.
Centuries passed. Then, in 1852, a man named Hiram Marble bought the land. He was a spiritualist. Marble believed he could communicate with Veale’s ghost. The ghost would lead him to the treasure.
Marble built a house and outbuildings. He moved his family to Dungeon Rock. Then, he began to dig. Marble and his son Edwin excavated a new cave. They followed directions from seances. They used dynamite and tools. They dug for years. But they never found the treasure at Dungeon Rock.
Today, you can explore the cave they dug. An iron door marks the entrance. It’s open for a few hours each day during warmer seasons. Or, you can request access from the local park rangers. Follow the signs in the park. The path leads up a hill.
The rock itself is unique. It may be two giant rocks together. Or, it could be one rock with a giant crevice. The door is set inside that crevice.
Inside, the cave is dark, wet, and cold. Bring a flashlight. Thin wooden steps lead down. The cavern winds 135 feet into the rock. Eventually, it becomes too small to stand in. It ends in a small pool of stagnant water.
Some remnants of Marble’s buildings still exist. You can find cellar holes and a fragment of wall. Near the wall is a large pink rock. It marks the grave of Edwin Marble. Hiram is buried elsewhere. He rests at Bay Path Cemetery in Charlton, MA.
