“The ridge fort” is what they called Dundrum. A name echoing through centuries. We’re standing at the edge of what was once Dundrum ED 1901. Imagine a small village. Just 500 souls called it home a century ago. Today, it’s hard to picture. Dundrum now boasts Ireland’s largest shopping center.
But close your eyes for a moment. Think back. The air is cleaner then. Life moves at a slower pace. The dominant sounds are birdsong and the gentle clatter of horse-drawn carts.
Taney was the ancient name for Dundrum. It meant “the house or place of Nath u00cd.” The area’s history stretches back to the 6th century. St. Nahi’s Church stood as a center of faith. It is a testament to the village’s enduring spirit.
The Normans arrived. A castle was built around the 13th century. Richard Fitzwilliam erected a newer castle in 1590. It served as a rural defensive outpost. It guarded against raids from Irish tribes like the O’Tooles and O’Byrnes.
Dundrum wasn’t just about defense. Commerce flourished. The Manor Mill ground corn into flour. A paper mill and ironworks thrived. They used the overflow waterfall.
The Dublin and South Eastern Railway arrived in 1854. Dundrum expanded. The Manor Mill became a laundry in 1876. It became the largest employer of women in the region. The laundry hooter was a familiar sound. It marked the start and end of workdays.
In 1893, Trevor Overend purchased a 19th-century farmhouse. It’s now Airfield House. The Dun Emer Press was founded in Dundrum by Elizabeth Yeats in 1903. Her brother William Butler Yeats assisted her.
Dundrum transformed. It was one of the first places in Ireland to open a shopping center in 1971. The Dundrum Town Centre opened in 2005. It dwarfed the old center.
Even with all the changes some things remained. The family at Campbell’s Corner has been doing shoe repairs since 1900. Mulvey’s Pharmacy has long antecedents in the village.
Look around. The past and present intertwine here. Dundrum ED 1901 may be gone. It lives on in the stories etched into the landscape. It is a reminder of a simpler time. It offers a glimpse into the soul of this ever-evolving place.
