Gazing upon these rugged ruins, what tales could Dundrum Castle tell if its stones could speak? Dundrum Castle stands overlooking the town of Dundrum in County Down. It is a testament to centuries of conflict and conquest.

Dundrum Castle was constructed around 1177 by John de Courcy. He was an Anglo-Norman knight. The castle was part of his campaign to control Ulster. Strategically positioned on a rocky hill, Dundrum Castle commands views. You can see Dundrum Bay, the Mourne Mountains and the plains of Lecale.

De Courcy’s initial fort at Dundrum Castle was likely made of earth and timber. Soon after, strong stone walls enclosed it. Around the 1180s, the polygonal curtain wall was likely in place with a deep ditch.

In 1204, Hugh de Lacy expelled de Courcy. King John captured Dundrum Castle in 1210. He feared the strength of Norman lords in Ireland. De Lacy returned in 1226 and fortified the castle. A large circular stone keep was built. This provided accommodation for the lord’s family. The keep’s walls are 8.5 feet thick. It is the strongest part of Dundrum Castle. A twin-towered gate was added around 1260.

The Magennis clan of Mourne controlled Dundrum Castle in the 14th century. They added the second outer wall for more protection. The MacArtain chiefs later held Dundrum Castle. Captures and regainings occurred in 1517 and 1538. Phelim Magennis MacArtain surrendered it to Lord Mountjoy in 1601.

Sir Francis Blundell bought Dundrum Castle in 1636. Parliamentarians ousted him. The Blundell family returned in the 1660s. They built an L-shaped mansion called Blundell House. By the 19th century, Dundrum Castle was in ruins. The 7th Marquess of Downshire placed the historic site in State Care in 1954.

A well was discovered under the keep in 1959. This explains the keep’s location as a fresh water supply was essential. A medieval lime kiln was uncovered in 2013. It would have extracted quicklime from stones to make mortar.

Lord Grey described Dundrum as one of the strongest holds he ever saw in Ireland. Though in ruins, Dundrum Castle remains impressive. The views of Dundrum Bay are breathtaking. Turrets and walls show its past grandeur. Imagine the battles fought here. They struggled to capture this mighty stronghold.

Today, Dundrum Castle is near the picturesque village of Dundrum. It is known for seafood and shoreline walks. The SS Great Britain ran aground in Dundrum Bay in 1846. This was the longest passenger ship in the world. The rescue took nearly a year.

Visiting Dundrum today offers free parking and access. Sea and mountain views create an ideal picnic spot. The castle was featured on Time Team. As you leave Dundrum Castle, consider its long history. Think about the people who lived and fought here. Their stories echo through these stones.
