In 1820, a charismatic preacher named Gideon Ouseley arrived in Dun Laoghaire. Dun Laoghaire Methodist Church traces its roots back to this remarkable man. Ouseley, a former gambler and hunter, had a dramatic conversion experience. He felt a calling to spread the Methodist message throughout Ireland. He preached in markets and fairs, captivating thousands with his powerful sermons. In 1820, exhausted and unwell, Ouseley came to Dun Laoghaire to rest and recuperate. Even while seeking recovery, his passion for preaching couldn’t be contained. He held services four times a week, establishing a small Methodist class of fourteen members. This small group marked the beginning of the Dun Laoghaire Methodist Church. The church’s first building was constructed in 1836 on the same site where the current church stands. This was a significant year. It coincided with the completion of the Dublin to Kingstown railway line. The current Dun Laoghaire Methodist Church building, completed in 1904, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Gideon Ouseley and the growth of Methodism in the area. A major extension was added in 1957, reflecting the continued expansion of the congregation. The church has witnessed the merging of congregations from Dalkey and Blackrock. It continues to serve as a vital spiritual hub for the community, a direct link to its vibrant Methodist history.
